Rogers and Fido New Unlocking Policy

Following behind the footsteps of first Bell, then Telus, Rogers and Fido has come out with their own Unlocking Policy today for their customers. Generally speaking “unlocking” a phone allows you to take it to another carrier and use it on their network.

The cost of this service is $50 + Taxes, Rogers/Fido says it will be applicable to their entire line of devices including, phones, smartphones, rocket sticks, rocket hubs, netbooks and tablets depending on manufacture restrictions. We’re not sure if this is hinting something about the Apple iPhone although Apple itself does not have any policy against unlocking devices, in fact, Apple has been selling the iPhone 4 Factory Unlocked at its own stores in Canada.

There are some restrictions like your contract must be over OR you must have bought the phone outright (contract free) more then 30 days prior.

Either way, this is a step in the right direction, and so far, Rogers/Fido is cheaper when compared to Bell which charges $75 but without the contract stipulation (you just have to had been with them for more then 30 days).

Hi Dan, Its Faisal Ali here, Executive Editor for All Things Mobile. Although this is the rule across the board in Canada, it seems that currently Rogers offers the cheapest “carrier unlock” there are other reputable sources in which you can unlock your phone, although if you unlock from the carrier, Rogers/Fido is the cheapest as of now.
